Technical Help / DRZ400s FCR Carb upgrade
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:05:07 PM »
So I decided to keep my 2003 DRZ400s. Was considering moving on but I'm going to stick with it and pour a little cash into it.  ;D

Looking to put an FCR carb on in it. Pretty sure this is what I want to go for...

Price seems good and it looks like this one is set up from the DRZ.

Has anyone gone this route? How is the price? Is there a better place to buy? let me know your thoughts...

General Discussion / Best DRZ Tires
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:58:59 PM »
What tires are you running on your DRZ?

My last two rear tires have been Kenda Trackmaster II. They used to be pretty cheap. Now they seem to be hard to find.

So, I'm back on the market. D606? MT21? What tires are you running on your DRZ?

Technical Help / drz400 Drive shaft nut
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:30:28 AM »
I had a tough time remembering what side of the driveshaft nut goes in. Found this picture in a search which tells the tale. the flat side with the cut out inside makes contact with the drive sprocket.

DRZ 400 General / DRZ 400 Radiator Cap Information
« on: April 16, 2011, 12:56:32 PM »
I have a hunch my radiator cap seal is compromised. I have been doing some research on replacements. Sounds like i can pick up a new one at an auto parts store...

Technical Help / DRZ 400 Coolant Replacement How To
« on: April 16, 2011, 05:19:00 AM »
Now that my radiator hose is fixed I need to repalace the coolant and bleed the system. Here are some answers to some of the questions I had...

What kind of coolant should I use in a DRZ400s?
50/50 mixed ethylene glycol green aluminum safe coolant.

How do I bleed the DRZ400 coolant system?
I found a great writeup here... http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-807820.html
However, it is missing an important step. You need to bleed the coolant pump too.

the bleed bolt is right in front of the cylinder near the top where the coolant line connects. I believe a thermostat is in that area. it is an 8mm bolt. A craftsman 8mm racheting wrench worked well for this. http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00942404000P

Anyone else have problems with the rear brake lever pinching folliage between it and the engine case? What are you guys doing to stop this? Wire up the lever to the frame? Any other ideas?

Technical Help / DRZ400s Radiator / Coolant Hose Leak
« on: April 13, 2011, 06:40:51 AM »
Yesterday I was just riding along (JRA) and coolant started dripping from my DRZ. I figured the worst and a seal was shot. I had just put on a new coolant pump last fall.

Turns out the radiator hose (part number: 17851-29f00) right behind the header got a slit in it just after the hose clamp of the left radiator.

Question: Can I replace this with regular coolant hose from an automotive store? The OEM tube is formed and shaped. I guess I will be risking the tube rubbing on something. Any other concerns?

Thought I would post a solution to a common problem with my DRZs. If it sits for a while or some dirt makes it into the carb the pilot jet can clog. This leads to the following symptoms

1) Bike starts and runs on full choke
2) If you give it gas the bike bogs and dies
3) If you turn off the choke or go to half choke the bike dies

If this happens pull the carb loose, drop the float bowl, take out the pilot jet. If you can't see any day light through the jet it's clogged. Sometimes you can only see a tiny spec of light.

Take a piece of thin wire and poke it through the jet. I use a strand from a bicycle brake cable. After poking it through a few times you will see some/more day light through the hole.

Hope that helps save people some time.

General Discussion / No US Suzuki Imports For Second Year In a Row

I was thinking this might improve the price of used DRZ's in the US. Any thoughts on how this might impact us?

General Discussion / My DRZ400s Winter Ride In UP Michigan
« on: January 21, 2010, 07:58:54 AM »
Studded up the tires on the DRZ 400 and took it to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for some snow riding. Snow was just over the foot pegs in most places and pretty solid from melting and freezing. Had a blast. DRZ did not like hot starts and eventually flooded out. I have the usual 3x3 airbox mod with yosh slipon and 96 dB insert. My carb has been gummed up and is probably the culprit. Needs a good cleaning. Anyway, click the link below for some pics and video.
