Stator cover

I have a 2007 drz400s with about 15,000 miles. I have kept it garaged and in pristine condition. I recently noticed corrosion and pitting on the left engine cover, mainly around the bolts that attach it to the engine. Back in 2011 a "friend" tried to sit on the bike and dropped it on the left side, causing the shift lever to puncher the cover. I immediately replaced the cover with a new one. The corrosion just started within the last couple months. I believe the cover is made out of magnesium. Anyone out there have a similar issue and/or a solution?
